I understand that you can t put a floating vinyl floor under kitchen cabinets but what about a floating island in the center of the kitchen. Likewise if you put some ply or concrete board down before the actual flooring then put that all the the way to the wall. Consider installing thin floorings such as luxury vinyl laminate or tile which are possible to lay right up to the cabinets. What i mean by floating island is that it will be free standing on legs underneath ikea leg stands and not bolted to the floor like a permanent island would be so it could be moved if needed.
When i remodeled my own kitchen four years ago i used wilsonart classic laminate flooring tiles and installed the flooring before the cabinets. For example if you put in underfloor heating you probably won t put pipes under cupboards but you should put the screed or other coverings all the way to the wall. Laminate flooring is a floating floor so we do not recommend installing kitchen cabinets on top of laminate as they could pin the floor down and prevent it from expanding and contracting with temperature changes leading to buckling and separation at the joints. Remove the cabinets and screw a plywood filler piece to the subfloor about inch inside the line where it will be under the cabinets.
If you are going to put in a hardwood floor and it is a total of 1 1 2 and you want 4 toe kick then the kick should be 5 1 2 tall and the cabinets should be 37 1 2 tall from the concrete. Instead we suggest installing your cabinets over your hardwood floors. Traditionally hardwood flooring is more commonly installed prior to the cabinets and sanded and finished as one of the last steps but with the increasing popularity of prefinished hardwood flooring the risks of damage during installation becomes greater. It is much quicker installing the flooring without having to cut pieces to fit around the cabinets although a bit more flooring is required this way.
