I like to dab my brush onto the cloth to pre dampen and then use the brush to remove the excess stain. An old sock or rag can be used to smooth out the coat if you have uneven spots. Always brush in the direction of the grain. Use a foam brush to apply the gel stain in the direction of the wood grain.
Then take a second dry brush and feather it out. If you plan to apply a top coat let the project cure for at least six hours and up to 48 hours. Then wipe the surface with a damp cloth to remove any dust. Give the surface a very light scuff with the sanding block.
When over straining allow each color to dry for 24 hours before applying the next. Use a tack cloth to wipe away all the sanding dust from the surface. However my bright kitchen will not see gel stain. Wipe a thick layer of gel stain across the cabinet.
